(ThySistas.comWomen in the world of business are at a massive disadvantage. As much as we wish it weren’t true, a lot of men prefer to promote other men over women. Whether they are doing it unconsciously or they are making a specific effort, it often makes it more difficult for women to advance their careers. Just because it’s harder, it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. There are a few simple ways that you can make yourself stand out from the crowd and beat them to the top of the career ladder.

Get Qualified

Statistically, men are more likely to get promoted over a woman that is equally qualified. The simple answer to that is to make yourself more qualified than everybody else, it will make you the more obvious choice for that job promotion. Going back to college full time isn’t an option if you want to keep your job so you’ll have to study in your own time alongside your work. There are plenty of self paced online courses that let you get a college degree in your own time, from home. It’s up to you how quickly you do it, but if you’re willing to put the hard work in then you can get another college degree in no time. Once you have, you’ll be a step ahead of everybody else.

Ask For A Promotion

I don’t necessarily mean barge into your boss’s office and demand a better job and a pay rise, that isn’t going to work. However, men tend to be more vocal in the workplace about their ambitions. Being driven and motivated is one of the things that an employer is going to look for when they are choosing people to promote. If they don’t hear you speaking about your goals and ambitions then they are more likely to think that you’re happy with your current level of responsibility. Showing an active desire to take on more work will prove to them that you have the drive that they are looking for.

Make Sacrifices

A good employee isn’t one that always taking the easy road. Somebody that coasts along isn’t going to get a promotion, even if their work is good quality. Be willing to make sacrifices and put yourself forward for the work that nobody really wants to do. It shows that you’re willing to put the success of the company first and make personal sacrifices to help it thrive. This is the kind of team player that bosses are looking to promote.

You should also be prepared to start working longer hours. When you’ve reached the top, you’ll be able to start taking a backseat and enjoying all of the rewards that come with hard work. But it isn’t an easy climb and you’ll have to put the time in now. Offering to work overtime to meet deadlines and catch up on work is a sure fire way to impress your employers and separate yourself from the herd.

Move Jobs

You’ve got to look out for number one in this world. It’s better to try to get a better position in the company that you’re at now, but sometimes it’s not possible. It might be that you keep getting passed up in favor of somebody else, or that you feel there isn’t really any new challenges there for you anymore. Whatever the reason, if you don’t feel that you’ll progress far enough, look for another job. Staying somewhere that has nothing to offer is just wasting valuable time when you could be climbing that ladder.
