Tips for Parents and Homeschooling.

The current time at home is already stressful enough with having to adjust to spending more time in your living room than in an office.  Your children are experiencing a similar shock; they cannot participate in school dances. They cannot talk with their friends during lunch about an upcoming test or the latest break up.  Education is important, but it is more important to make sure that your family is physically and mentally sane. Take care of home first. Then, take some time to participate in learning opportunities just to make sure they do not forget.  School teaches, but home can do the same.

An Education Change Is Gonna…Wait. It’s Here.

It is funny how Sam Cooke’s lyrics can apply to the current education system.  State and Federal education agencies do not want to collaborate.  Online education companies are knocking other companies’ down just for financial compensation.  Parents are running trying to find out ways to help their children keep the fire of knowledge lit in these despairing times.  It is possible for all of us to get over the bridge together and have policies in place that can help us operate long after Coronavirus has a cure.  The change is not coming. It is here. We need to figure out a plan before we are on our knees.

Malcolm X Started Me on the Quest for Humanity.

It’s not simply color, or lack thereof, that white people see…the problem is they don’t acknowledge what they see is a human being. This may seem off to some because we tend to be able to accept that in this world bad people do bad things to people. However, even in those situations the humanity as in physical state of being is usually never the issue. For black people in America it I’ve come to believe it is the primary issue; it is at the root of the war we are fighting. I have Malcolm X to thank for putting me, through his work, on the road to that understanding.

Admitting the Change Upstream.

When I was sitting on my bed crying, it happened because I had to admit that something I had been chasing for almost my entire life was something I would never obtain.  The reason I would never obtain it is because of the person I am now.  That goal was something I set a LONG time ago before I really became an adult.  While I would love for it to happen, it can not. I have to come to terms with that.  The change, however, is something that I can accomplish as an adult and feel confident in knowing that this change is for me.  It will make me better. A better me means a better world.  I may not like the change upstream, but I am grateful that it is happening.

The Legal Age for Culture and Values.

Then, you have other students who you know for certain are in survival mode at home and learn what they can when they can.  Whose fault is it?  We could play the blame game all day and night on this.  That game would not solve the problem. A collaboration between parent and the village (teachers, coaches, managers, etc.) that help to develop your child is the greatest way to close the gap.  It is the greatest to support our future and to secure a future with better decisions.

I Will Teach My Kids About Dr. King.

I need my children to know standing up for what you believe in can be dangerous, but not having any dignity is worse. I need them to acknowledge the fight in Dr King, and the principle. School could have talked more about principle and could have used his commemoration to discuss taking a stance for what’s right. However, in a school with a majority of white students and faculty that might be uncomfortable because this discussion means acknowledging black people have been, and are, harmed by white people in this country. I never want my children to be delusional about words like unity and equality. It was spoken on as if these are things that have been accomplished in this country, and we know better. I will own my children education about blackness, and black leadership for their sake…and mine.

No Kids on Purpose.

There are many factors that you may not be privy to to elaborate on why the stork has not dropped anything on their doorstep…and may never do so.  For some,  physical ailments keep them from reproduction. For others, time and making a living keep them from bringing forth a new generation. Whatever the reason may be, do not allow it to keep you from treating parents or non-parents with any less respect.
