(ThySistas.com) But Don’t Let the Title Fool You

Admit it. You’re getting old. Your kids call you old, your friends, family and coworkers are calling you old. But if you’re like me, in your head you are not old. Old is only a frame of mind. That’s what they say right?

I am a 46 year old woman and I have no problem with being 46. As a matter of fact I love being 46. I embrace being in my 40s. I have started back exercising. I love motorcycles and I’d love to stop being the passenger for aBlack woman smiling on city street change and to be the driver. My son wants me to buy a bike so we can ride in Forest Park. Now how cool is that? We both want to try zip lining this summer. I ran that one by him and he’s down.

When I share this with others the first thing I hear is “you’re too old.” Those three words drive me crazy. I always react by saying, “Hell I ain’t old. You old! I’m not claiming that one. You can claim it for yourself.”

Now I know that I’m no spring chicken and yes in about three and a half more years I will be 50 or as my son so nicely puts it “half a century”. But I just want to know why people are so quick to embrace old age. I’m not saying that aging is such a horrible thing. I am talking about the mentality of aging as in my body and mind is breaking down and I’m ready for the retirement home even though I am not even 60 yet.

Maybe it’s me, but I truly believe that you’re only as old as you think you are. Yes we are beginning to get a few aches and pains here and there and no we may not come back from a slip or fall as quickly as we did when we were in our 20s. But why do some of us embrace being broken down as if it’s a badge of honor?

With all that being said I began to think. Do I have a problem with turning 50? Am I in denial of growing older? Am I fighting the aging process?

Well I guess you could say yes and no. No I don’t have a problem with turning 50 because I appreciate the years that I have put in so far and living this long means that I have been blessed.

I have a lot to say on this topic so there will be more to come…..
