From what we wear and how we style our hair to what’s on our faces, how people perceive us matters! With that, let’s talk about dark spots.

Most women of color have had to deal with this issue at some point in their lives. It is annoying, to say the least. If you haven’t you are one lucky woman. Often times dark spots lead to embarrassing moments that make us feel less than beautiful and the truth is, they can happen to anyone.

The best way to know how to treat them is to get a better understanding of why they happen in the first place. There are skin diseases and conditions that cause dark spots. Acne is another situation that can leave your face severely scarred. Finally, overproduction of melanin in one spot can cause dark areas and patches of darker skin too. You can cover them with makeup, but why not get rid of them? Here are some suggestions.

Lemon Juice

If you are the kind of person who likes do it yourself (DIY) projects, then you can explore all the ways lemon juice can rid your face of dark spots. One of the great things about natural remedies is that you know exactly what you are getting so there are no surprise ingredients. Squeeze lemon juice into a bowl and then apply it to your problem areas with a cotton ball. Let it dry, then rinse with water. Do this about twice a day for two weeks to see results.

Ambi

As a child, my grandmother would rub this on my knees. The go-to cream works wonders with fading dark spots and evening one’s skin tone. It goes straight to work to restore balance. In fact, it can be used on pretty much any part of your body. It is also a plus that it’s pretty affordable, running about $4 at most retailers.

Turmeric

This is another DIY home remedy. The super ingredient of the spice world is anti-inflammatory, making it useful for a variety of ailments. It will even out your complexion. Just use it as a paste (turmeric, buttermilk, and lemon juice) then rinse with lukewarm water after 10 minutes.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Is there anything this awesome liquid can’t cure? To take advantage of the acidic lightening benefits, mix ½ teaspoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of ACV, apply it to your problem areas and let it dry. Rinse with water and repeat daily for best results.

When it comes to your skin, it is definitely a sensitive matter. We want to make sure we present our best selves and that means putting a lot of effort into taking care of our bodies, hair, and faces. When dealing with unwanted dark spots, you have to approach the situation delicately but purposefully. While you want to fade the blemishes away, you don’t want to harm your skin in the process. These suggestions are helpful tips on how to do just that.
