(ThySistas.com) Summer is underway, and I don’t know about you, but I plan on spending a lot of time in the sun and at the beach. These are some of the great things about this time of year. The liberty to take in the rays that we so desperately want and need while lying poolside in our favorite swimwear relaxed and free.

One of the things that we often probably don’t think about during the summer is the need to take care of our hair and skin. The water, whether it be the ocean, a lake or a pool, can sorely damage our hair in a way that will have us paying for it all year long. The same rings true of our skin. We want to preserve our melanin for as long as we can.

So, because I know it’s important to you to take care of yourself (and have fun) here are some hair and skin tips to help you maintain a healthy you all summer 16′.

Sunscreen

Don’t be fooled; black folks need sunscreen too. Our melanblackwoman-Naturalhair-2016in naturally has an SPF up to 13, but we need just a little bit more to protect us from the harmful effects of the sun. For women of color, it can be hard to find a sunscreen that works with your skin without the chalky look that many products leave. Enter L’Oreal Paris Advanced Suncare Sunscreen SPF 50. It is perfect for brown skin because it’s silk like texture gives you the coverage you need without the buildup. It is a non-greasy, lightly scented sunscreen that will leave your skin glowing.

Argan Oil for Dry Hair

With swimming comes the risk of drying out your hair. Summer is the time to take extra precautions. Argan oil is an excellent choice to help replenish your hair’s moisture. The fatty acids and vitamin E will enrich and nourish your hair helping it to look healthy, even after a day at the pool.

Everyday Summer Hair- Soultanicals

If you want to be kind to your hair all summer (and all year) Soultanicals is an Afro-vegan company with amazing products. Combining “self-love with the holistic culture and traditions of Mama Earth,” Soultanicals is “100% toxin-free, cruelty-free, vegan, and free from all artificial preservatives, fragrances, and dyes.” You can find their products on their website at http://www.soultanicals.com.

Body Butter

What better way to take care of your skin after a dip in the pool than with a good body butter to nourish your skin? Shea Moisture’s Argan Oil and Raw Shea Body Lotion is ideal. With Frankincense and Myrrh extract, it has a pleasing smell as well as the desired effect on your body. It will revitalize dull skin and rejuvenate aging skin. All good things for an effective summer time skincare regimen.

Summer is meant to be enjoyed and as you do, remember your hair and skin along the way.
