How to Get Involved in Your Community.

(ThySistas.com) We live in perilous times. With the way the government is run and the onslaught of natural disasters, we as a nation need to come together as much as possible. If everyone can find a way to do their part, I believe that things would definitely get better for every member of American society. It doesn’t have to be big gestures that make headlines. Your efforts can be concentrated in your community because that’s really where the difference is made. Changing your world changes the world.

Get involved locally as much as possible. It doesn’t have to be the city council or running for office. You can find ways to give back through local organizations, efforts, and other outlets. So if you are looking for ways to affect change on the local level, here are some ways to have your voice heard and get involved.

Donate Your Unused Items

Look through your things and get rid of the stuff that you don’t use anymore. Whether clothes, shoes, toys, tools or furniture, giving these things away is a great channel to give back to your community. This can be through a local organization or a local church. In Baltimore where I lived for three years, there’s a church that has an event where people can come and stuff all that they can into a bag for $1. All items were donated by members of the church. It’s a great event.

Join Something

This can be a PTA group, a local nonprofit, a club or anything that has a focus on making your community better. Children are our future, so giving your talents to a parenting group can help ensure that it operates at the highest level possible, which allows the children to have access to the things that they need.

Organize an Event

If you are a planner (like me) then why don’t you organize your own event? This will give you the opportunity to give back in whatever way you see fit. It can be through a local theatre performance that you sponsor. Throw a block party. Organize a clothing drive or do something fun like a talent show. If you are moved to offer something to the community, go with it and do it. It’s a great way to meet the other members of your neighborhood.

Volunteer

Giving your time is one of the best ways to get involved and affect change on the local level. In most communities, there are a number of organizations that you can give your time to. Whatever your passion is, see if there is a community entity that matches that passion. If you find one, dedicate a certain amount of time throughout the week to help the organization reach its goals.

Run for Office

Don’t let the fact that you have little to no experience keep you from running for an office. That’s how most politicians start their careers; at the local level. If you see a need and feel like you can make a difference or make things happen that your community, launch the campaign and give it all that you have.

Getting involved in your community takes many shapes. Find where you fit and do it with all of your heart.
